Learner goals and capabilities

Our students participate in a two-semester internship in their senior year to satisfy our degree requirement. The educational studies degree prepares students to work with children, youth, and adults in formal or informal learning environments within nonprofit settings, community and academic institutions, civic organizations, and businesses. As part of their internship, students should be involved in internship activities and have the opportunity to create and implement a Human-Centered Design Project.

Project Examples

Requirements

Please note that we are happy to consider and review projects but would like to solidify the final projects in March or April 2022 and begin work in August 2022.

During the internship, students can be engaged in various experiences within your organization, where they are supporting learners or supporting the learning environment. Listed below are some of the activities students can engage in:

  • Facilitating learning activities
  • Assisting learning activities
  • Leading outreach activities
  • Coordinating educational programs
  • Conducting research
  • Researching and designing learning materials and environments
  • Marketing & Fundraising
  • Managing and overseeing projects
  • Collaborating with partners

*Please note this degree does not lead to teacher certification, so our students should not complete internship hours in PK-12 classroom teaching or assisting roles.

Human-Centered Design (HCD) Project In addition to participating in Internship Activities, our students are studying the Human-Centered Design Thinking process. The student will work with you and your team to identify, create, and implement a learning-focused project that meets your organization’s educational needs. You do not need to be an expert in design thinking, you just need the willingness and time to collaborate weekly with the student. The best projects are created when our students can meet with their supervisor for 30-60 minutes each week.

To participate in Internship Activities and Complete the HCD Project, we anticipate students will need to spend around 85 hours each semester (about 6 hours a week, across 15 weeks) at their internship site.

This is a credit-bearing internship but we welcome the possibility of students getting an honorarium or other incentives.
