About Us People, Words & Change is a non-profit organization. We provide opportunities for English-speaking adults in Ottawa to improve literacy, numeracy and/or basic computer skills which are essential to working, learning, and living. One-on-one tutoring is provided free of charge by volunteer tutors to meet the needs and goals of the learners. Several times a year we have in-person or virtual events to raise money and awareness. Overview From surveys we know that our learners are generally very pleased with the services they receive. The main concern raised is that people have found it difficult to locate us. The difficulty is not in the geographical location, it is for adults to find a place that meets the specific needs that we do. It is important to us to become more visible to the general public. We would like to reach more clients that match our set of criteria - adults in Ottawa seeking to improve basic skills in a small-group or one-on-one setting. In addition we would like to develop greater potential for donations and supporters in the broader community. The Project Our focus for this project is to meet these needs by strengthening our online presence. Currently, our social media platforms are Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. We use Facebook and Twitter with the most regularity, approximately four days a week, to share posts about events, fundraisers and other pertinent information. Despite regular use, there is room to improve the types of posts and the amount of engagement we are able to generate. We use Instagram slightly less and YouTube rarely. To improve our practices and performance, we would want all or some of the following: Research of our current practices and audience. Recommendations for improving practices and reaching a larger target audience. Strategies for improving our online presence and increasing engagement. Sample social media posts. Recommendations for advertising and PR materials. As we are a non-profit organization, our intention is to meet these needs without additional costs. We have three employees, two of whom maintain the social media marketing duties with some help from one member of our board of directors. The employees complete these tasks in addition to regular duties. For this reason, creating dynamic, engaging posts is a goal but one to be fit within moderate time constraints.
