Bio

Hi, I'm Karolinaβ€”a former geology graduate turned computer science student and researcher, passionate about data-driven insights and software development. I'm a 4th-year CS student with 2 years of research experience and 1 year of web development experience.

See my work at: https://karolina.codes

I began research after my first year, completing two summer research internships and continuing part-time as a research assistant. I have worked under two supervisors on separate projects:

🌐 AI Applications in Global Navigation Satellite Systems – Explored machine learning techniques to improve smartphone positioning accuracy. I found that KNN achieved 92% accuracy in classifying positioning data. My research laid the foundation for a conference publication, which uses Random Forest models to classify GNSS signals into line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS), improving precise point positioning (PPP) accuracy. https://www.ion.org/publications/abstract.cfm?articleID=19761

πŸ‘§πŸ» Citation Biases in Computing Literature – Conducted a large-scale analysis of 90,000+ papers from the top 100 software engineering journals, uncovering gender-based citation disparities. See the pre-print here: https://arxiv.org/abs/2410.02801
To address this, I am leading the development of CiteFairly, a web tool that analyzes citation biases and suggests research to diversify references. CiteFairly is built with Node.js, Express, React, Firebase, and the Semantic Scholar API to provide actionable insights for researchers.

Beyond research, I have developed multiple full-stack applications, including:

🎧 DJ WAMP Merch Store – A full e-commerce platform with product filtering, cart/checkout, account management, and an admin panel.
🌱 Daily Planning App – A Google Calendar-integrated tool that generates personalized daily reports.
🀝Mentor-Mentee App – Currently working on a cloud-based platform using microservices architecture on Azure, expanding my expertise in cloud technologies.

Citation Biases Researcher
DARE! Lab at York University
May 2024 - August 2024

- Research focus on detecting and mitigating citation biases in computing literature
- Analyzed 90,000 papers from top software engineering journals and identified a consistent trend in literature where women are under-cited and men are over-cited, with this disparity steadily increasing since 2009.
- Utilized Python and R to conduct analyses, stored data using MongoDB, leveraged external APIs including CrossRef and Gender-API to extract and classify reference data based on author demographics.
- Presented at the 2024 Lassonde Undergraduate Research Conference and the 2024 Canadian Celebration of Women in Computing Conference
- Open Source Repository: https://github.com/KarolinaTchiling/gender-citations-swe-public
